Life of Messiah – Conflict over the message from Jesus about the shepherd.  John 10:1-6  Jesus’ listeners did not understand the points He was making during this teaching.  This type of teaching was typical subsequent to the Jewish leadership rejecting Jesus as the Messiah.  Isaiah 40:11 refers to this shepherd that Jesus refers to in the gospel of John.  The teaching includes likely criticisms of the Pharisees.  A good leader leads from the front.  John 10:7-10  Jesus taught that if one is to be saved, they must come through the door/Jesus.  There is no other way.  The thief in this text is, most likely, false teachers.  1 John 2:18  John describes many anti-christs.  Jesus came for His sheep to give them an abundance of life, not a restriction on enjoying life.  John 10:11-18  The other sheep in verse 16 are Gentiles.  The Law kept Gentiles separate from God.  The Law was for Jews only.  If the Law was not fulfilled then all Gentiles are without hope.  The Law was fulfilled so no one can be under The Law anymore.  A good shepherd lays down his life for the flock.  Jesus is responsible for laying down His own life.  John 10:19-21  A division is evident as a result of Jesus’ teaching.  Some believed in Him, others did not.  The witness of the 70:  Luke 10:1-9  Jesus sends out 70 people in pairs to prepare the way for the last part of His ministry.  As a disciple, you will be sent out among wolves.  The content of the message of the 70 is that the kingdom did come near you.  There will be even greater division to come.
