Isaiah

Who was Isaiah?  His name means “Yahweh is Salvation”.  He was a major prophet.  Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel are considered the 3 Major Prophets.  He was born around 760 BC.  He died around 680 BC.  He was son of Amoz.  Two independent kingdoms existed at this time.  The Southern kingdom that included Jerusalem and the Northern kingdom known as Israel.  2 Kings 21:16.  Speculation is that Isaiah was executed by King Manasseh.  Hebrews 11:37 is another reference to maybe how Isaiah may have met his death.  2 Chronicles 25:1-3.  Isaiah’s ministry took place when Israel was divided and included civil war.  To accommodate the Northern kingdom, there was a duplicate temple in Samaria.  This was not consistent with God’s instructions.  Assyria become a world power during this time.  Assyria began their aggression against the Northern kingdom, Israel and eventually the Northern kingdom disappeared.  Assyria pressed on towards the Southern kingdom and Jerusalem.  Isaiah’s message to Judah was that of repentance as Judah/Jerusalem became more and more concerned about the Assyrian aggression towards them.  Isaiah 8:3 – Isaiah’s wife is described as a prophetess.  Isaiah 7:3 indicates Isaiah has a son.  Isaiah reduced the 613 commandments into 3 groups. The themes of Isaiah are:  The coming Messiah of Israel, The Messiah’s 1st and second coming, the time in-between, The Day of the Lord, The Messianic Kingdom, The Holy one of Israel, The Remnant of Israel, a call for Israel’s national repentance, and the Inadequacy of current religious worship (going through the motions for tradition and not with the heart and faith)
