David still remains in the wilderness. Saul continues to pursue David after the Ziphites report David location to Saul. Saul takes 3,000 men to go after David. David sends out scouts to understand Saul’s movements. David and Abishai were able to slip into where Saul was sleeping due to a God induced sleep over the entire army of Saul. Abishai offers to kill Saul but David does not allow it. They take Saul’s spear and water jug. David rationalizes that God is in charge and refuses to take matters into his own hands. Later, David accuses Abner and the other soldiers of not protecting their king. Saul joins the conversation. David, again, appeals to Saul regarding his loyal intentions. Saul makes the following confessions:
- That he has sinned
- He will not try to harm David again
- He has been a fool
- He has committed a serious error
This is the last time Saul and David encounter each other.
